Pap Smear Test: The Gold Standard in Early Detection of Cervical Cancer
The Pap smear test is a simple but vital test that uses a sample of cells taken from the cervix to detect abnormal cell changes in the cervix at an early stage. This test plays a major role in the prevention of cervical cancer and its precursors.
Who is the test recommended for?
- For every woman who begins sexual activity, starting at age 21
- After age 30, along with HPV testing
- Especially women who have multiple sexual partners or are at risk for HPV
How is it done?
The woman lies on a gynecological chair, the cervix is opened, and cells are collected with a sterile brush and sent for laboratory analysis. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is painless.
Next steps based on the result
- Normal result: Repeat testing every 3-5 years is sufficient
- Abnormal result: further tests or colposcopy may be needed
